Skulltaste: A Fuckin’ Short Music Review

I saw Mux Mool when he came to Hampshire College last year, but I didn’t really get a feel for his music. I pretty much remember darkness, sweaty bodies, flashy lights and fucking loud. Which, as it turns out, is exactly how it’s supposed to be.
Who The Fuck…?: Mux Mool is a DJ / “Electronic musician” from Minnesota, who started his career in Brooklyn, ‘cause seriously who the fuck in Minnesota wants to rave. Skulltaste is his full-length debut from 2010.
The Fuckin’ Sweet Parts: There are some seriously catchy, infectious synth lines on this album. If you can listen to the beginning of Get Better John and not dance to it, you’re either deaf or a fucking robot. And not the cool kind of robot. Mux Mool also produces some sounds that are unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Granted, I don’t listen to much electronic, but fuck off, they’re still cool. Also he doesn’t use wobble bass ever thank the fucking lord.
The Lame Shit: Some of the songs (okay, pretty much all of them actually) lack a certain unity. There’ll be this fucking sweet synth line and beat in the beginning, and by halfway through the song, it’s more of a mess of sounds in the same key. Honestly, the main problem though, is that I am listening to this album alone in my room, and there is an unacceptable dearth of glowsticks.
The Verdict: Skulltaste is absolutely music to dance to. Music to be smooshed up against sweaty strangers in a dark room to. When taken out of that environment, it just doesn’t quite hold up the same way. It’s not fucking awful, per say, but it sure as hell isn’t going to hold your attention, and you notice all the things that he should have done better. For now, it’s going in my Work playlist, cause this shit will be great to procrastinate to.
